How To Use The ACCA SBL Pre-Seen Properly

The ACCA SBL pre-seen document is one of the most important resources you’ll receive before your Strategic Business Leader (SBL) exam.

It gives you an early understanding of the organisation, the industry it operates in and the commercial challenges it faces. That understanding becomes incredibly valuable when the exam introduces new information and asks you to make professional judgements.

Here are five ways to get the most from your pre-seen.

Read the Pre-seen Before Anything Else

When the pre-seen is released, spend some quiet time reading it from beginning to end.

The document is usually around 10 to 12 pages, so it’s perfectly manageable in a single sitting.

As you read, make notes, highlight important information and think about what the organisation is telling you. What kind of business is it? Where does it seem to be doing well? Which challenges keep appearing throughout the document?

That first read-through helps you develop your own view of the company. Later, when you watch revision videos or discuss the case study with your buddies, you’ll already have your own understanding to build on.

Do Your Own Analysis

Once you’ve finished reading, start analysing the business.

A SWOT, a PESTEL analysis, Porter’s Five Forces and a review of the financial information are all worthwhile exercises.

The real benefit comes from working through these frameworks yourself. As you think about the organisation from different angles, you’ll naturally develop a much stronger understanding of its position, its market and the issues affecting its decisions… which can be quite useful!

Bring the Case Study to Life

Talking about the pre-seen with other students is one of the best ways to strengthen your understanding. A good discussion often highlights ideas you hadn’t considered and helps you see the organisation from different perspectives.

If you’re studying with a tutor or on a revision course, take every opportunity to join those conversations. If you’re studying on your own, spend some time exploring the industry behind the case study instead.

For example, for the June 2026 sitting, Ben and I went and got ourselves a fancy haircut to explore the premium salon market which was the industry in question for that sitting (DKK). Experiences like this can teach you loads and also can be really fun.

Learn the Facts You’ll Want at Your Fingertips

The pre-seen usually contains a handful of facts that come up again and again.

Cash balances, ownership structure, growth targets and key performance indicators are all good examples.

There probably aren’t many of them, perhaps 10 or 12 across the whole document.

Knowing these facts means they’re immediately available if they’re relevant to the point you’re making. You won’t need to interrupt your thinking to search for a number or a statistic during the exam.

What is the purpose of the pre-seen?

The purpose of the pre-seen is to give you useful background information.

You are still going to have to read the exhibits on the day of the exam to actually answer the questions but having a clear understanding of the organisation and industry are very useful.

Every quarter, Ben Wilson and I make videos on the SBL pre-seen that comes out. It goes live on our ClubSBL channel and it goes over loads of useful tips and insights from the pre-seen.
